Thomas William Brewer

 

 

             Thomas William Brewer was born in 1824 in Fauquier Co., Virginia.  His mother died when he was about 2 years old.  He and his sister Sarah Ann were raised by their grandparents, Anthony and Sarah Ethel.  

 

              He went to  Ohio and taught school.  There he met and married  Azuba Osburn on July 22, 1847 in Morgan Co., Ohio.  Samuel Adams, J.P., officiated.  In  1850, his name was listed as William Brewer in the census record for Lodi Township, Athens Co., Ohio.  All of their 8 children were born in Athens Co., Ohio.

 

            Family history says that he and his wife, Azuba, were part of the underground railroad movement.  They helped Negro slaves escape from the south. Thomas  enrolled for duty in the Civil War, July 25, 1861, at Downington.  He was mustered into service on August 15, 1861 at Camp Chase, Ohio, as Sergeant with Co. C, 30th regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI).  His description given is as follows:  37 years of age; 6 ft. 1 inch, light complexion, black eyes, light hair. 

 

            From November 10, 1862 until February, 1863, he was on recruiting service in Ohio.  On May 22, 1863, he was killed in the assault on Vicksburg, Mississippi.
