submitted by Mary Hoegh

Nancy Ellen Stevens was born March 9, 1838 near McConnelsville, Ohio and passed to her reward from her home in Sidney, Iowa, Wednesday evening, May 7, 1924.

The deceased was the daughter of Samuel and Nancy Stevens.  When eight years of age her parents moved to Iowa and settled in Henry County.  There she grew to womanhood and became acquainted with her life companion and was married to John W. Carter, December 14, 1854.  Nine children were born to them to cheer and bless their home.  Three died while small, Thomas at the age of fourteen and Johnie in 1907.  The living children are: Samuel Carter, Mrs. Alice Young, Mrs. Nancy Lehr, Arthur Carter of Sidney, Iowa; William Carter of Randolph, Ia., and Mrs. Anna Otte, like an own child was a member of the household from the age of six years.  All were continuously and lovingly by her side with tender ministries of love.

Mr. and Mrs. Carter moved to Sidney in 1859 where they have lived, Mr. Carter having passed away six years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Carter joined the Methodist Church here in Sidney about forty five years ago and remained faithful workers.  Mrs. Carter was one of Sidney's truly good women, believing in God, lived His work and sought earnestly His will to find and do.  She has been in very poor health for about six months and gradually grew weaker until the end came.

Those left to mourn her loss, besides those mentioned above, are numerous relatives and friends.  A beautiful, sympathetic service was held in appreciation of her in the Methodist Church, Friday afternoon.  The service was in charge of her pastor, Rev. Prather, who appreciated her faith and prayers very much.  Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Hodges, Mrs. Samuels, Mrs Engelke and Mr. Williams.  The grandsons acted as pall bearers.  The body was lovingly laid to rest in the Sidney Cemetery.
