Civil War
Thomas William Brewer
Served with Co. C 30th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His rank was sergeant.
His commanding officer was Charles Lowrence. He mustered into service as a private August 15,
1861 at Camp Chase. On the rolls for May & June 1863, he is reported killed in action near Vicksburg, Mississippi, May 22, 1863.
1-6-2000 According to the historian at Vicksburg National Military Park: "killed in action along Graveyard Road on May 22, 1863, Sergeant Brewer was interred in a shallow grave at or near the spot of his death, possibly without a headboard to mark his grave. In 1867, shortly after the establishment of the national cemetery at Vicksburg, the remains of Union soldiers that could be located on the battlefield were disinterred and buried permanently in Vicksburg National Cemetery. Regrettably, the majority of these men are unidentified. Of the 17,000 Union soldiers interred at Vicksburg, 13,000 are unknown. It is likely that Sergeant Brewer is among those simply listed as "Unknown."
